One of the most popular draws of last year’s American Family Insurance Championship proved to be the nine-hole celebrity scramble. Wind River Financial will be returning as a sponsor of this year’s AmFam Championship – June 19-25 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison – and we’re excited to share that Brett Favre will be returning to participate in the celebrity group.
In addition to the Green Bay Packers legend, New York Yankees star Derek Jeter, Grammy award-winning recording artist Darius Rucker and two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North will be rounding out the celebrity 4-some. The celebrity scramble was a hit with the capacity crowd, which tournament officials estimated at 15,000 on Friday and 20,000 for Saturday’s round.
While the play at last year’s event was serious – drawing praise from the press and tour officials alike – the local celebs kept the mood light with continual banter and plenty of laughs. In one instance, Favre could be heard ribbing his partner, Steve Stricker, after Stricker dropped a pass in a side game of catch on the 17th hole.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Favre characterized the dropped ball as a “Perfect pass.” “Even Andy knows it was a perfect pass,” said Favre. “Steve’s got a really smooth golf swing, but his route-running is a little questionable.”
The celebrities also held a press conference after their round to discuss their play and continue the good-natured banter.
