As we gear up for the winter & snow, we take a look back on how October fared in terms of credit card sales. I’m happy to report that Wind River’s overall portfolio of merchants experienced 8.8% year-over-year growth for the month of October! Breaking it down further, 58% of our Merchants saw year-over-year credit card sales increase with Business Services (MCC 7399) leading the way for all categories with a 72% increase. Not a surprise with Fall Sports in full swing that Sporting Goods saw the 2nd highest growth for October at 70% over last year with the restaurants in our portfolio seeing the 3rd highest growth at 22%.

Like the Milwaukee Brewers though, not all of our merchants saw abundant Octobers such as Durable Goods (MCC 5099) seeing a -39% change in credit card sales next to Insurance (-18% change) and Hardware Industries (-11% change) compared to last October. Taking a step back from Wind River’s portfolio and looking at the overall economy, consumer spending in October was stable with predictions that shoppers may be able to use more of their discretionary spending due to lower gas prices and an improving job market. As the U.S. nears its traditional period of frantic holiday shopping, we look forward to seeing sales increase for more of our merchants.

Before you dash away to the stores to check those gifts off your holiday lists, please take time to celebrate the small businesses in your communities. As popular as Black Friday has been for shopping, make sure to take time the following day for Small Business Saturday on November 29th. Learn more about the small businesses in your local area and how to promote and rally your neighborhood businesses here.

We realize that credit cards are only part of the overall picture of your total sales, and we look forward to your feedback on how we can help improve your payment environment.
